Wright's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Mustangs to Road Win at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - Stevenson University senior Montaque Wright banked in a 50-footer as time expired to lift the Mustangs to a 67-64 MAC Commonwealth men's basketball win over Alvernia Thursday night at McCloskey Court.

  • Stevenson (10-3, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) opened by outscoring Alvernia (4-9, 0-5 MAC Commonwealth) 9-2, with a Wright layup five minutes in giving the Mustangs a seven-point cushion.
  • Trailing 12-4, the Golden Wolves scored six straight to pull within two at the 11:18 mark.
  • The Mustangs led 19-14 with just under seven minutes left in the opening period following a pair of free throws by Johnny Rhodes.
  • The hosts used a 9-0 run to build a 23-19 lead with 4:36 to go before intermission.
  • Stevenson countered with a 9-1 run of its own, and a Marcus Dentley three with 1:42 left put the visitors up 28-24.
  • After Alvernia tied the game with four straight points, a pair of free throws by Mark Terrell with 11 seconds left put the Mustangs up 30-28 at the break.

  • The lead changed hands seven times in the first 10 minutes of the second half.  Alvernia eked out a 50-46 lead at the 11:44 mark, but a Walt English basket at 11:37 and a Wright basket at 9:43 forged the fifth tie of the half.
  • Neither side led by three for the rest of the game, and two free throws by Terrell with 2:40 to go tied the game 61-61.
  • Alvernia took a 64-61 lead with 1:23 left on a basket by Nick Youngin.
  • On the other end, Johnny Rhodes knocked home a three from the right corner with 1:03 left to tie the game once again.
  • Youngkin misfired on a three on the other end and English collected the rebound, but a Mustang turnover gave the ball back to the hosts with 24 seconds to go.
  • Keon Taylor missed a three for the Golden Wolves, but Wright collected the long rebound and banked it home from 50 feet for the game-winner.

  • The game featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes and neither side led by more than eight.
  • Stevenson shot 42.9% overall and 7-19 from three, while the Golden Wolves shot 47% overall and 4-13 from long range.
  • The Mustangs went 12-14 at the free throw line, while Alvernia was 12-20.
  • Stevenson held a 37-28 rebound advantage.
  • Stevenson improved to 5-1 in games decided by five or fewer points.
  • Rhodes finished with a season-high 18 points, one shy of his career high of 19 set last season against Elizabethtown. He also had four assists.
  • Terrell totaled 16 points and six rebounds.
  • Wright finished in double figures for the ninth straight game with 14 points. four rebounds and four steals.
  • The win was win No. 100 for head coach Gary Stewart at Stevenson.
