OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson University swept the first day of its annual Stevenson Beach Volleyball Invitational, downing Carson-Newman and Morgan State by 5-0 scores on Saturday afternoon.
Against the Eagles, the closest match came at No. 4, with sophomores Julie Nightwine and Victoria Prokic recording a 21-17,21-13 win. Senior Lauren Weaver and sophomore Katie Leftridge held their opponents to a combined 14 points at No. 2 in a 21-5, 21-9 win, while at the No. 6 exhibition match, senior Katie McGuire and freshman Sarah Riggin won 21-15, 21-18.
In the win over Morgan State, which competes as part of their spring indoor volleyball season but not as a varsity program, sophomore Emily Castro and freshman Lizi Cudal were pushed in the second set but prevailed 21-12, 21-19. Weaver and Leftridge once again held their opponents in single digits in both sets, winning 21-5, 21-4.
Senior Annika Schwartz and sophomore Trang Christensen were 2-0 at No. 1, while sophomore Darian Hileman and freshman Jessi Freeman also went unbeaten on the day at No. 3, improving to 19-3 on the year.
Stevenson faces the same two teams Sunday to close out its season, playing Carson-Newman at 10 am and Morgan State at 2 pm.
