TAVARES, Fla. – The Stevenson University women's beach volleyball team reached the finals of the 2018 AVCA Small College National Championship that wrapped up on Sunday. The Mustangs moved into the final with a 3-2 win over Warner before falling to top-seeded Webber International 4-1 in the final.
Against Warner, who the Mustangs defeated for the third time this season, senior Annika Schwartz and sophomore Trang Christensen pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 with a 14-21, 21-13, 15-11 victory. Sophomore Darian Hileman and freshman Jessi Freeman won their 11th straight match at No. 3 with a 21-16, 21-11 triumph, while at No. 4, sophomores Julie Nightwine and Victoria Prokic were 21-12, 21-11 winners.
Nightwine and Prokic picked up Stevenson's point in the championship match, pulling out a 21-19, 16-21, 15-11 win at No. 4. At No. 2, senior Lauren Weaver and sophomore Katie Leftridge went to three sets, taking the first set 21-18 and dropping a 28-26 battle in the second set before falling 15-5 in the third. Schwartz and Christensen dropped both sets at No. 1 by 21-19 scores.
Stevenson travels this Friday and Saturday for four matches at Principia in Elsah, Illinois. The Mustangs take on Principia and Ottawa on Friday and will face Lewis and Clark CC and Division I Morehead State on Saturday.
