TAVARES, Fla. – The Stevenson University women's beach volleyball team won both of its matches in pool play at the AVCA Small College Championship at Hickory Point on Saturday. The Mustangs swept San Diego City College 5-0, then edged Warner 3-2.
Following pool play, Stevenson has earned the No. 2 seed in the seven-team single-elimination bracket and will have a rematch with Warner at 11 am Sunday, with the winner advancing to the championship match against either top-seeded Webber International or fourth-seeded Huntingdon.
Against SDCC, the Mustangs were taken to three sets in two matches. At No. 2, senior Lauren Weaver and sophomore Katie Leftridge rallied for an 18-21, 22-20, 15-8 victory, while at No. 4, sophomores Julie Nightwine and Victoria Prokic also rallied from a first set setback, winning 14-21, 21-14, 15-11.
The No. 1 duo of senior Annika Schwartz and sophomore Trang Christensen won 21-9, 21-12, while at No. 3, sophomore Darian Hileman and freshman Jessi Freeman were 21-16, 21-9 winners. Sophomore Emily Castro and freshman Lizi Cudal won 21-10, 21-8 at No. 5.
Against Warner, a team the Mustangs had defeated 5-0 earlier, but in three five-set matches, Stevenson prevailed at No. 1, 3 and 4 to earn the victory. Schwartz and Christensen were 22-20, 21-13 winners, while Hileman and Freeman posted a 21-11, 21-12 triumph. Nightwine and Prokic won 21-17, 21-13 at No. 4.
Castro and Cudal forced a third set at No. 5 but fell 22-20, 18-21, 15-11. Weaver and Leftridge fell 21-16, 21-17.
