LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Stevenson University Athletics Communications office was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Wednesday for its coverage of Mustang men's and women's volleyball as the organization announced a total of 60 regional and conference Grant Burger Media Award winners in men's, women's and beach volleyball.
The Athletic Communications office, consisting of associate athletic director Greg Royce, assistant athletic communications director Samantha Murray, athletics video producer Joe Wamba and graduate assistant David Adamovage, were honored as the Mid-Atlantic regional winner in women's volleyball and the Middle Atlantic Conference winner in men's volleyball.
The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.
The Athletic Communications office is responsible for publicity and promotion of all 27 of Stevenson's varsity athletic programs. The office handles the website, including game recaps for all games home and away, previews and award releases, social media promotion, as well as live production of all Mustang home matches in men's and women's volleyball. The office also produces video highlights after each home match as well as interviews with women's head coach Dave Trumbo and men's head coach Aldis Berzins. In addition, the office produces weekly coaches shows with both Trumbo and Berzins.
Stevenson also hosted an eight-team regional in the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship, for which is was responsible for promotion, video production and statistics for all seven matches.
Both Stevenson volleyball teams reached their respective NCAA fields this past season. The Mustang women won their sixth straight MAC Commonwealth championship and made their seventh straight NCAA appearance, while the men's team won the inaugural Middle Atlantic Conference title and reached the NCAA quarterfinal round.
