Mustangs Take Five Set Thriller, Advance in NCAAs

ITHACA, N.Y. - Fifth-seeded Stevenson University took the final three points in a topsy-turvy fifth set to down fourth-seeded Hunter College 3-2 in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Ithaca Regional at Ithaca College's Ben Light Gymnasium Friday evening.  Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 16-25, 25-19, 17-15.

  • Hunter (24-9) used a 5-1 run to take a 19-15 lead following a Mustang attack error.
  • Down 20-16, the Mustangs (23-11) used a 7-1 run capped by a Darian Hileman service ace and a Victoria Prokic kill to take a 23-21 lead.
  • A kill by Katie Leftridge made it 24-22, and a block by Leftridge and Chelsea Ireland closed out the set.

  • Stevenson eked out an early 5-3 advantage, but a 7-1 run by the Hawks gave them a 10-6 lead.
  • Hunter extended its lead to 18-9 on a kill by Kendra Moore.
  • The Mustangs rattled off five straight points and a Leftridge kill pulled Stevenson within four, 18-14.
  • A Julie Nightwine service ace capped a 9-2 run and pulled the Mustangs within two, 20-18.
  • The Hawks closed the frame on a 5-1 run to even things up.

  • A Sarah Riggin service ace put Stevenson on top 7-6 before a 9-3 run by the Hawks gave them a 15-10 lead following a Taylor Haiduk kill.
  • The Mustangs pulled within 15-12 on a block by Leftridge and Ireland.
  • Hunter closed the set on a 7-2 run to take control of the match with a 2-1 lead.

  • Hunter took an early 7-4 lead following a Mustang attack error.
  • After forcing four straight ties, a 3-0 Stevenson spurt capped by a block by Ireland put the Mustangs up 13-11.
  • A Hawk attack error capped three straight Mustang points after back-to-back Leftridge kills and put Stevenson up 16-12.
  • The Hawks had three straight points to cut the lead to one, before Stevenson reeled off three straight and took a 19-15 lead on a Hileman kill.
  • Prokic's kill closed out the fourth set and forced the deciding fifth set.

  • Leftridge and Mackenzie Blevins each had two kills as the Mustangs took a 5-2 lead.
  • A Hunter attack error had Stevenson up 8-7 at the changeover.
  • After the lead changed hands twice and Hunter forged a 10-10 tie, a Blevins kill and a block by Leftridge and Prokic put the Mustangs on top 12-10.
  • A Leftridge kill made the set 14-12 and had the Mustangs serving for the match.
  • The Hawks reeled off three straight points and a Kylie Hurst kill put Hunter up 15-14 and it was serving for the match.
  • Moriah Savage closed the match out with three straight kills to give Stevenson the 17-15 win and the match.

  • Stevenson improves to 6-7 all-time in NCAA tournament play.  The Mustangs are making their eighth straight NCAA appearance.
  • The Mustangs won their 12th straight match.
  • Stevenson downed Hunter in the NCAA opening round for the second straight season.
  • The Mustangs improved to 5-4 in five-set matches this season.
  • Leftridge posted her 13th double-double of the season with 19 kills and 16 digs.  She also recorded six blocks.
  • Blevins hit .276 and tallied 11 kills, while Savage finished with 10 kills.
  • Hileman had a team-best 24 digs and also recorded four service aces.
  • Emily Pellini notched 17 digs.
  • Caroline Dangel totaled 27 assists and 11 digs, while Nightwine posted 18 assists and 14 digs.
  • Stevenson hit .126 for the match but hit .306 in the fourth set and .242 in the fifth.
  • Hunter hit .139 as a team.
  • The Hawks were making their fifth straight NCAA appearance and 13th overall but remain searching for their first NCAA win.

  • Stevenson faces top-seeded Ithaca, a 3-0 winner over Southern Vermont, in a 5 pm regional semifinal on Saturday.
