Mustangs Survive Scare From Lycoming, Sweep Tri-Match

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team survived a scare from Lycoming to open a tri-match at Owings Mills Gymnasium Saturday but rallied for a 3-2 win.  The Mustangs swept Washington (Md.) College 3-0 in the nightcap.

  • Set scores were 22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10.
  • After dropping the second set, Lycoming (8-5, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the third set.
  • Trailing 24-17, the Mustangs (9-6, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) reeled off four straight points to pull within 24-21 on a Chelsea Ireland kill, but a service error gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
  • Stevenson trailed 19-15 and 20-18 in the fourth set, but the Mustangs closed out the frame with seven straight points, including three straight aces by Ireland.  A Katie Leftridge kill closed out the set.
  • Upset-minded Lycoming jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth before five straight Mustang points put the hosts up 8-6.
  • After Stevenson built an 11-7 lead, the Warriors had three straight points to pull within one, before the Mustangs had the last four points, and another Leftridge kill closed the match.
  • Leftridge finished with 16 kills and 15 digs to lead the Mustangs.
  • Freshman Mackenzie Blevins had a career-best 10 kills and added three blocks.
  • Victoria Prokic and Moriah Savage each notched nine kills.
  • Ireland finished with eight kills, four aces and four blocks.
  • Darian Hileman posted 11 digs and chipped in seven kills.
  • Sarah Riggin led Stevenson defensively with 25 digs. 
  • Julie Nightwine recorded 20 assists and nine digs, while Caroline Dangel and Emily Castro had 15 and nine assists, respectively.
  • Stevenson hit .225 as a team, while the Warriors hit .155 as a squad.
  • The Mustangs had nine service aces in the win.

  • Set scores were 25-19, 25-15, 25-14.
  • 17 players saw action for the Mustangs in the nightcap.
  • Savage led Stevenson with 10 kills, while Leftridge had nine.
  • Dangel totaled 13 digs, with Leftridge recording 12 and Hileman 11.
  • Nightwine handed out 19 assists, with Dangel adding 14.
  • Stevenson hit .272 as a team, with Washington (6-9) hitting just .010, with 18 kills and 17 errors on 98 attacks.

  • Stevenson's win over Lycoming in the opener was its 52nd straight MAC Commonwealth regular-season victory.
  • The five-set win marked just the third time the Mustangs have been taken to a fifth set in MAC Commonwealth regular season play, and the first since downing Lebanon Valley 3-2 on October 19, 2016.
  • Leftridge's double-double in the opener was her sixth of the season.
  • Dangel's double-double against the Shorewomen was her fifth of the year.
  • Stevenson totaled 60 digs against Washington College, its most in a three-set match this season.
  • Stevenson has won three in a row and seven of its last eight matches.

  • Stevenson hosts a key MAC Commonwealth match Tuesday night as it welcomes Arcadia (10-3, 3-0) to Owings Mills Gymnasium.  First serve is slated for 7 pm.
  • The Mustangs and Knights met in last season's conference title game and are two of three unbeaten teams in MAC Commonwealth play this season.
