No. 24 Mustangs Go 1-1 on Opening Day

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 24th-ranked Stevenson women's volleyball team split a pair of matches to open the 2018 season at the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport on Friday.  The Mustangs downed Keystone 3-0 before falling to Mary Washington, a team receiving votes in the preseason AVCA poll, 3-0.

  • The Mustangs prevailed by scores of 25-21, 25-12 and 25-22.
  • Stevenson hit .348 as a team, including .440 in the second set as it had 12 kills and one error, while the Giants (0-1) hit -.034 in the second and .146 for the match.
  • Junior Katie Leftridge led the Mustangs with 11 kills and seven digs, while senior Moriah Savage and junior Darian Hileman each registered six.
  • Junior Victoria Prokic had five kills on eight attempts (.625 hitting percentage) and a pair of blocks.
  • Juniors Caroline Dangel and Julie Nightwine each had 12 assists.
  • Sophomore Sarah Riggin led the Mustangs defensively with 13 digs.

  • Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.
  • Savage had six kills and five block assists for the Mustangs, while Leftridge and freshman Mackenzie Blevins each registered five kills.
  • Prokic had seven block assists.
  • Riggin recorded 11 digs, while Dangel notched a double-double with 10 digs and 10 assists.
  • The Mustangs hit .021 as a team, while Mary Washington hit at a .147 clip, including .219 in the third frame.

  •  Stevenson won its season opener for the 14th straight season.  The Mustangs last did not win to start the season in 2004.

  • Stevenson has two more matches at the Captains Classic Saturday, facing Muhlenberg at noon and No. 23 Christopher Newport at 4 pm.
  • The Mustang home opener is set for Wednesday at 7 pm against Albright.  That match is also Stevenson's MAC Commonwealth opener.
