SALISBURY, Md. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team remained unbeaten with a pair of victories at the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic on Saturday. The Mustangs (4-0) downed Swarthmore (1-2) 3-0, then posted a 3-1 win over Salisbury (3-1).
Stevenson is off to its best start since the 2013 campaign when it won its first 23 matches.
Against Swarthmore, the Mustangs prevailed by scores of 29-27, 25-22, 25-22. Senior Annika Schwartz tallied 11 kills and nine digs, while sophomore Katie Leftridge added seven kills and seven digs and senior Lauren Weaver contributed six kills and eight digs. Sophomore Julie Nightwine totaled 24 assists and nine digs, while classmate Caroline Dangel handed out 12 assists and also made nine digs. Senior Deanna Bradbury had 23 digs as well.
The Mustangs dropped their first set of the season against the Sea Gulls, winning 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 25-14. Weaver had 13 kills, while junior Moriah Savage notched 11 kills and four blocks. Schwartz recorded 10 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Dangel totaled 18 assists and nine digs, while Nightwine contributed 16 assists and 12 digs. Bradbury added 19 digs, while juniors Chelsea Ireland and Lauren Jan each had five blocks.
Schwartz and Bradbury were each named to the All-Tournament team.
Stevenson returns to action Wednesday evening when it hosts Messiah College in its MAC Commonwealth and home openers. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Mustangs and Falcons have squared off in each of the last five conference finals, with Stevenson winning each time, including a 3-2 win last season.
