Women's Volleyball Posts Two Sweeps to Open Season

SALISBURY, Md. – Stevenson University, which is receiving votes in the AVCA Division III Top 25, opened the women's volleyball season with a pair of 3-0 sweeps of Medaille College and Geneva College at the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational Friday night.

Against Medaille, Stevenson (2-0) won by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-11, while it defeated the Golden Tornadoes 25-18, 26-24, 25-12.

A total of 16 players saw action against Medaille.  Junior Moriah Savage totaled six kills, while seniors Annika Schwartz and Lauren Weaver and sophomore Katie Leftridge each tallied five.  Sophomore Julie Nightwine handed out 16 assists as the Mustangs hit .300 as a team while limiting the Mavericks to -.018 hitting.

Schwartz notched nine kills and seven digs against Geneva, hitting .444 with just one error on 18 attempts.  Weaver had seven kills apiece Savage and Leftridge finished with six apiece.  Leftridge also notched four blocks.  Juniors Chelsea Ireland and Lauren Jan each added five kills, while Jan notching four blocks and Ireland three. Nightwine handed out 21 assists, while senior Deanna Bradbury notched 17 digs.  Stevenson hit .308 as team.

Stevenson faces Swarthmore and host Salisbury in day two of the Sea Gull Classic on Saturday.
