OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Alexis Siejack scored her team leading seventh goal, but the Stevenson women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Grove Cityin the 2016 ECAC Division III Women's Soccer Quarterfinal Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The second-seeded Mustangs (9-8-2) end the season with their eighth winning season in the last nine seasons while advancing to postseason play for the eighth time. The loss also ends the careers of Siejack and fellow seniors, Jordan Porretto and Jessica Demko.
Back and forth to start the game, it was the visitors who got on the board first as Elena Guerra beat the Stevenson defense and ran onto a long header from Megan Van Kirk. With junior goalkeeper Tiffany McKee running off her line, Guerra was able to get a foot to the ball first for the score.
Down the other end, the Mustangs earned the first corner kick of the game and nearly leveled the game at 1-1 as freshman Alyssa Rasmussen got free in the 18-yard box but her shot was headed off the goal line by Claire Kocur.
In the 28th minute, the top-seeded Wolverines (17-5) extended their lead to two as Lindsay Hutton scored off a header on the far post following a corner kick by Jordyn White. It was the first corner kick of the day for Grove City.
With just 1:37 remaining in the opening half, Rasmussen played a through ball for Siejack who beat the Grove City defense and goalkeeper Trishae Winters to the far right corner to get the hosts back within one.
The visitors added an insurance goal in the 77th minute as Guerra was alone down the right side before crossing it to Lacy Harkrader who tapped it in for the score. It was the 15th goal for Harkrader who leads the Wolverines.
Grove City outshot the Mustangs, 13-10 while also holding a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wolverines advance to the 2016 ECAC Division III Women's Soccer Semifinals next weekend. Game time and location is to be announced.
