OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Highlighted by 11 goals from the senior class, the Stevenson women's lacrosse team picked up its first win in the MAC Commonwealth as the Mustangs rolled past Arcadia, 21-8, Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Mustangs (4-6, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) and gave 12th-year head coach Kathy Railey a win in her 200th game at Stevenson. The 21 goals was also a season-high for the Mustangs and the most since April 21, 2015.
The Knights (5-3, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board first with a goal by team leading scorer Shannon Ryan but the hosts responded with five straight. Freshman Carly Bowes recorded all five of her points during the run, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists.
The final four goals of the 5-0 run came in a 2:01 span, including the final two just nine seconds apart.
A free-position goal for Arcadia stopped the run, but the Mustangs scored five of the final seven goals to take a 10-4 halftime lead. Senior Brady Heher scored a pair of goals while classmate Olivia Monteiro extended her goal streak to 11 games with a score midway through the half.
Both Monteiro and Heher finished the game with three goals, marking their 19th and 13th career three-goal games, respectively. For Monteiro, it is her third consecutive season with 30 goals while Heher recorded her 20th goal for the third straight season.
After freshman Sarah Roerty scored her first career goal in the opening seconds of the half on a free-position shot, the Knights responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 11-6. But that would be as close as Arcadia would get as the team scored just two goals over the final 26:21.
The Mustangs won 23 of the 31 draw controls with Bowes, Monterio and Roerty all grabbing five. Monteiro and Roerty also combined for nine ground balls and two caused turnovers.
In pregame ceremonies, the team honored Bruno, Heher, Monteiro, Reese, Rachael Akshar and Gabby Brooks. Both Akshar and Brooks suffered career-ending injuries.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 when the Mustangs travel to Hood for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
