REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Chelsea Ellis netted her first career hat trick and added two assists while both seniors Monica Pozuc and Savannah Sommers recorded a pair of assists as the Mustangs skated to a 7-3 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Neumann on Senior Day Friday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
With the win, the Mustangs (11-7-4, 8-3-2 UCHC) moved one point out of third place in the conference with three games remaining. It is also the eighth straight win for Stevenson in the 13-game series versus Neumann after the Knights took the first five. Over the last eight games, the Mustangs have outscored Neumann, 30-12.
The hosts dominated the opening period as Stevenson outshot the Knights, 19-1, including finding the back of the net twice. Sophomore Allyson Barlow opened the scoring on assists from senior Allie Bruns and sophomore Jordan Pirrello before junior Kellen Wittman scored on an assist from Ellis 29 seconds later. Bruns extends her career-best point streak to four games with the assist while both Barlow and Wittman found the back of the net for the second time in the last three games.
Bek Lucas, the nation's leading scorer, got the visitors on the board just 2:20 into the second period but the Mustangs responded with four consecutive goals, including three in the period. Wittman netted her second goal of the game, her fourth career multi-goal game, before Ellis scored two of her three goals, including the second on the power play.
After the hosts were whistled for a penalty to end the second period, the Mustangs penalty kill units went on the offensive as senior Chelsea Blackburn netted her second shorthanded goal of the season just 36 seconds into the period on the second assist of the night from Pozuc. With the two assists, Pozuc tied the program record with 48 career assists and moved into a tie for second place with 79 career points. For Blackburn, the goal gives her 33 points on the season, tying her own record set as both a sophomore and junior.
Neumann (12-7-2, 9-3-1 UCHC) responded 16 seconds later with a power play goal, the first of two for the Knights. The Mustangs responded with a power play goal of their own as Ellis completed her hat trick on the second assist of the night from Sommers as well as an assist from senior Sarah Antonelli.
The senior class, who has amounted a 64-29-7 record in their four years, accounted for 12 of the team's 17 points. Together they have totaled 332 points on 148 goals and 184 assists.
The Mustangs outshot the Knights, 56-16 and finished 2-for-6 on the power play. The hosts also won 39 of the 64 face-offs, including 14 wins apiece by Ellis and Blackburn.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 10 when the Mustangs travel to Neumann to complete a UCHC home-and-home series. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
