REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Laura Brezinski netted her first goal of the season while senior Natalie Rosendahl scored her first career game-winning goal as the Mustangs posted a 2-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Utica Friday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
The win was the fourth consecutive for the Mustangs (8-7-3, 5-3-1 UCHC) who are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 games. Stevenson, who improves to 4-2-2 on home ice this season, evened the four-game series versus Utica and have won two straight versus the Pioneers.
After a back and forth opening 10 minutes, Brezinski netted her first goal of the season just past the midway point of the opening period on a wrister over the glove side of Bria Reilly. Junior Maddy Ricci won the puck along the boards to freshman Trinity Barcless who carried the puck towards the blue line. Rosendahl overtook the puck and found Brezinski, who carried it towards the net before firing it for a 1-0 lead.
It is the fifth assist of the season for Barcless while Rosendahl picked up her fourth. Barcless has recorded six of her seven points on home ice this season while Rosendahl has recorded all six of her points at home. The goal is the second career score for Brenzinski.
After being outshot 15-5 in the opening period, the Pioneers (8-9-0, 4-5-0 UCHC) outshot the hosts, 10-7 in the middle frame. Stevenson was whistled for three penalties in the second period but the Mustangs penalty kill units killed off all three shorthanded situations. The hosts penalty kill units were perfect on the day, going 5-for-5.
Utica took control of the third period early, recording the first eight shots including the game-tying goal just 3:54 into the period. Taylor Osowski scored on a breakaway goal with a backhander to the far post on an assist by Meghan Power.
Despite getting outshot, 16-6 in the period, the Mustangs scored a power play goal with 7:56 remaining in regulation as Rosendahl sent a wrister past Reilly from the blue line after Brezinski slid the puck across at the point. After Utica could not clear the puck out of the zone, junior Cierra Siemasko controlled the puck before sending it to Brezinski at the point. Rosendahl fired the puck on the right pad of Reilly for her seventh career goal.
It is the seventh multi-point game for Rosendahl and second this season while marking the first career multi-point game for Brezinski.
Stevenson improves to 57-8-2 under head coach Tracy Johnson when scoring the game's first goal and 49-1-2 when leading after two periods. The team also improves to 67-9-7 all-time when holding its opponents to two goals or less.
The Mustangs, who took a season-high seven penalties, finished 1-for-8 on the power play. The Piooners outshot the host, 31-28 but Stevenson finished with 18 blocked shots, including three apiece by seniors Allie Bruns, Chelsea Ellis and Savannah Sommers.
Sophomore Annie Smyth-Hammond finished with 30 saves and has a win in her last three starts. She is 3-0-2 over her last five starts and has a 1.35 goals against average and a .952 save percentage over that stretch.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, January 27 when the Mustangs host the second of a two-game UCHC series versus Utica. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
