REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Monica Pozuc scored with 6.9 seconds remaining in overtime as the Mustangs finished a weekend Colonial Hockey Conference sweep over Morrisvile St. with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
With the win, the Mustangs (13-9-0, 7-3-0) are tied for second place with Morrisville with two games remaining and hold the tiebreaker after winning both matchups. The top two teams in the conference receive a first-round bye in the Colonial Hockey Conference playoffs.
Neither team scored in the opening period as Stevenson held a slight 10-9 edge in shots. Both teams scored a second period goal, including the fifth goal of the weekend by junior Chelsea Blackburn. The defensive pair of junior Natalie Rosendahl and freshman Rachel Grewette picked up the assists.
Blackburn's power-play goal with five seconds remaining in the player advantage was her 14th career power-play goal and she now sits alone with the program record.
Kanekaroroks McComber picked up her third point in the two games as she buried a rebound attempt on the back post with 19 seconds left in the power-play.
Morrisville outshot Stevenson, 6-4 in the third period but the host Mustangs had 10 blocked shots in the period and finished with 14 in the game. Freshman Carly McGee led the team with four while Rosendahl totaled three, including one right in front of the net on a Morrisville power-play late in regulation.
With time running out, Blackburn maintained possession of the puck and carried it to the opposite side of the ice before firing one on net. Pozuc was there in front to clean it up and give the Mustangs their fourth straight victory.
Freshman Annie Smyth-Hammond was solid between the pipes, turning away 25 shots.
Morrisville held a 26-23 edge in shots for the game and went 1-for-5 on the power-play while the hosts were 1-for-6. It is the fourth straight game for the Mustangs with a power-play goal.
Stevenson concludes the regular season with a two-game Colonial Hockey Conference series at Canton beginning on Friday, February 17. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
