MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Chelsea Blackburn scored twice in the third period as the Mustangs opened its Colonial Hockey Conference defense with a 2-0 victory over Becker Friday evening at the New England Sports Center.
The Mustangs (2-1, 1-0 CHC) extended their conference unbeaten streak to 15 games as the team finished 13-0-1 in the inaugural season a year ago. The defending conference champions posted their 10th shutout in the league and ninth consecutive win.
Neither team could find the back of the net through the first two periods as Stevenson heavily outshot the Hawks, 31-9 at the second intermission. The visitors thought they got on the board with 5:33 remaining in the second period, but the power play goal was called off by the officials.
Blackburn put the Mustangs ahead at the 9:08 mark on an assist from junior Monica Pozuc. Pozuc has had a point in all three games to start the season with all three coming on assists. Classmate Natalie Rosendahl has a two-game point streak after assisting on Blackburn's second goal with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.
The line of Blackburn, Pozuc and freshman Jordan Pirrello all finished with a plus-two rating and is a combined plus-eight on the year with four goals and three assists.
The Hawks (1-2, 0-1 CHC) were whistled for eight penalties but Stevenson was 0-for-7 on the power play. The Mustangs penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4 and is 19-for-20 on the season.
Sophomore Caitie Darosa posted her fifth career shutout after finishing with 14 saves.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 5 when the Mustangs and Becker face off for the second of a two-game CHC series. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
