ASTON, Pa. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Jordan Pirrello scored her first career goal but UMass Boston scored two early goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Mustangs Friday afternoon at Ice Rinks Arena.
The Mustangs (0-1) saw its 12-game winning streak end from last season as the team falls to 2-2 in season openers under fourth-year head coach Tracy Johnson. The team also falls to 1-3 versus the Beacons after defeating them to win the Codfish Bowl in 2015.
It took just 11 seconds for the Beacons (1-0) to get on the board as Rachel Peacock scored an unassisted tally on a backhander off a rebound attempt. Lizzie Aveson added a second goal 3:01 later to make it 2-0 after the Mustangs could not clear it out of their defensive zone.
UMass Boston, who appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season, converted on just one power-play on 13 opportunities in the game as Maren Brown was given a wide-open shot that went above the near shoulder side of sophomore Caitie Darosa in the seocnd period.
Darosa finished with 28 saves in just her sixth career start.
The Mustangs avoided the shutout as junior Monica Pozuc found Pirrello on a three-on-one opportunity as the rookie sent a shot over the shoulder to the top left corner. Freshman Carly McGee was credited with the second assist.
The Beacons outshot the Mustangs, 31-23 and won 43 of the 78 face-offs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, October 29 when the Mustangs travel to Neumann for a non-conference contest beginning at 5:00 p.m.
