ASTON, Pa. - Highlighted by two goals by senior Jessie Capanelli and two assists by senior McKenzie Taggart, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 season opening victory over Neumann Friday evening at Ice Works.
The Mustangs (1-0) improved to 2-2 in season openers, including 2-1 under third-year head coach Tracy Johnson. The team also posted its fourth-straight win over Neumann and leads the series, 4-2.
Senior Madison Lange scored her 12th career goal 5:40 into the opening period on an unassisted tally after getting space down the left side. The Knights (0-1) would tie the game with 8:44 remaining in the first on a give-and-go by Rebekah Lucas and Lauren Cusak.
Capanelli scored her second career game-winning goal 26 seconds into the second period after Stevenson crowded in front of the net and got off three-straight shots. Taggart and senoir Megan Alexander picked up the assists after each took a shot. Alexander finished 18-for-24 on faceoffs.
The seventh career power-play goal by Capanelli extended the visitors lead to two just over midway through the second. Taggart, the program leader in assists, finished with two assists for the eighth time in her career.
The Mustangs outshot Neumann, 37-18, including 17-5 in the second period.
Senior Sarah Modzelewski finished with 17 saves for her 17th career victory. Justina Mayr finished with 34 for the Knights.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, October 31 when the Mustangs host Neumann in the home opener at Reisterstown Sportsplex. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
