Rally by No. 20 CNU Thwarts Mustang Upset Bid

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 20 Christopher Newport outscored Stevenson 27-12 in the final quarter to thwart the Mustangs' upset bid and the Captains posted a 66-64 non-conference women's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Freeman Center.

  • Stevenson (0-2) trailed 6-2 early but a basket by Hannah Crist at the 6:19 mark put the Mustangs up 9-8.
  • Christopher Newport (2-0) retook the lead nine seconds later on a Jasmine Norman layup.
  • A layup by Jonyae Curry with seven seconds left in the quarter tied the game 13-13 after one.

  • The Mustangs opened the second half on a 7-0 run and a basket by Brandi Hall 1:43 into the frame put the guests up 20-13.
  • Six straight points by the Captains pulled them within one, but Crist answered with a three-pointer with 4:26 left in the stanza to half the run.
  • Stevenson held the lead the remainder of the half, but a CNU layup with three seconds left tied the game 30-30 at intermission.

  • Kiana Kirkland sank a three on Christopher Newport's opening possession to give it a 33-30 lead.
  • Following a Campbell basket, a steal and layup by Crist put the Mustangs back on top at the 7:43 mark.
  • Up 39-37, Stevenson closed out the third quarter on a 13-2 run and a layup by Laila Abdul-Rahman with 52 seconds remaining extended the margin to 13, 52-39, entering the final frame.

  • The Captains scored the first seven points of the fourth before a basket by Campbell halted CNU's run at the 8:18 mark.
  • Stevenson led 56-47 with 6:20 left following a Crist layup.
  • Another 7-0 run by Christopher Newport pulled it within two, 56-54, with 3:34 left.
  • A layup by Olivia Coleman with 2:24 left stopped the run by the hosts and put Stevenson up by four, 58-54.
  • CNU used a 9-0 run to go up 61-56 with just under a minute left on a pair of free throws.
  • Curry sank two free throws with 54 seconds on the clock, then following a Captain offensive foul, Crist made a three with 17 seconds left to tie things 63-63.
  • Madison Howdyshell made a layup for CNU with nine seconds to go to retake the lead, but at the other end, Campbell was fouled with four ticks on the clock.
  • Campbell made the first, but missed the second, and the Captains grabbed the rebound and made 1-of-2 at the line to account for the final.

  • Christopher Newport, ranked No. 20 in the preseason D3hoops.com poll and the top team receiving votes in the WBCA poll, finished 25-5 last season and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.
  • Stevenson shot 40% (24-60) from the floor and 72.2% (13-18) at the free throw line, but committed 31 turnovers.
  • The Captains shot 36% overall and made just 10 of their 17 free throw attempts.
  • The Mustangs outrebounded CNU 44-43.
  • Curry posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while also recording four assists and two steals.  She finished 6-6 at the free throw line.
  • Campbell recorded a career-best 18 points and recorded three assists and three steals.
  • Crist knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with 13 points.
  • Coleman blocked six shots and pulled down 12 rebounds.
  • Kirkland led Christopher Newport with 20 points.

  • Stevenson travels to Rocky Mount, N.C. this weekend to compete in the Jean Edge Classic hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan.  The Mustangs face Methodist on Saturday and the host Battling Bishops on Sunday.
  • The Mustangs are in the midst of a five-game road swing and return hom Saturday, December 1 against Lycoming.
