Mustangs Split Home Opener Versus York (Pa.)

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson softball junior Morghan Fulton picked up her first win of the season in the pitching cirlce while senior Erin Stephey launched her eighth home run in the last two seasons as the Mustangs split a non-conference doubleheader versus York (Pa.), winning, 4-3, before falling, 8-7, in nine innings, Thursday afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.

  • After Fulton retired the first six batters of the game, junior Erin Muir hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the second inning but was left stranded on third with one out.
  • The Mustangs (1-3) got out of a jam in the top of the third inning, stranding a runner on third with just one out, before getting on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Junior Haley Lennon hit an RBI double to score sophomore Kayla Briles to give Stevenson a 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans (8-6) took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Alyssa Harhigh with no outs before Fulton retired the next three batters.
  • Fulton again retired the side in order in the fifth inning before an RBI single by Stephey tied the game at 2-2. Fulton then hit a two-RBI single up the middle to clear the bases.
  • York (Pa.) got one run back in the sixth inning to get within, 4-3, but Fulton struck out two of the final three batters in the top of the seventh.,
  • Briles and Stephey each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Fulton was 1-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate while picking up her first win of the season in the cirlce behind four strikeouts.

  • The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the hosts responded with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by freshman Jessica Alicea.
  • York (Pa.) scored in each of the next three innings, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning to push the visitors lead to, 5-1.
  • In the bottom half of the fifth, Briles and Lennon hit back-to-back singles before Stephey hit a three-run home run to get back within one.
  • An two-out RBI single in the fifth inning by sophomore Alexandra DiGrande tied the game at, 5-5.
  • Neither team scored in the following two innings to force extra innings and the international tiebreak rule, placing a runner on second at the start of each inning.
  • The Spartans scored in the top of the eighth with two outs before the hosts responded in the bottom half of the inning.
  • An bases loaded RBI single up the middle by junior Samantha Znamirowski tied the game at, 6-6, before the runner at third was thrown out after over running the bag. The Mustangs loaded the bases a second time after a single by Alicea but York (Pa.) extended the game after Samantha Kiser forced a groundout.
  • In the ninth inning, the Spartans once again scored the go-ahead run with two outs before adding an insurance run on a fielding error.
  • Stevenson got one run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI by Fulton but left a runner stranded on third.

  • Stevenson had a season-high 12 hits in game two while adding seven hits in the opener.
  • Stephey finished 4-for-8 with four RBIs, two runs, a home run, and a double. The home run was the 10th of her career.
  • On the bases, Briles was 3-for-3 on the stolen bases, all in the first game.
  • Fulton was 3-for-8 with three RBIs and a double.
  • For Alicea, the hits were the first of her career as she finished 2-for-4 in the second game.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, March 16 when the Mustangs travel to Clermont, Florida for spring break. The team will play eight games.
  • The Mustangs return home on Saturday, March 23 when the team hosts a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader versus Arcadia beginning at 1:00 p.m.
