MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Stevenson University women's beach volleyball team went 3-0 in a tournament between the three NCAA Division III teams on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Mustangs defeated Huntingdon College 5-0, then recorded another 5-0 win against the Hawks on Saturday. Stevenson then defeated Principia 4-1 on Saturday to move to 8-5 overall.
With the wins, Stevenson has already surpassed last season's win total, as the Mustangs went 6-10 in their inaugural campaign a year ago.
On Friday, the No. 2 pair of sophomore Grace Coleman and Trang Christensen rallied for a 19-21, 21-12, 15-8 win. The No. 1 duo of junior Lauren Weaver and freshman Katie Leftridge were 24-22, 21-17 winners, while graduate student Samantha Perillo and senior Sara Bollinger pulled out a 21-17, 21-18 win at No. 3. Junior Megan Hren and freshman Darian Hileman were victorious at No. 4 21-8, 21-15, while junior Deanna Bradbury and sophomore Chelsea Ireland cruised to a 21-8, 21-8 win at No. 5.
In Saturday's second match against the host school, Weaver and Leftridge were extended to three sets at No. 1 before winning 21-16, 17-21, 15-11.
Against Principia, Coleman and Christensen battled at No. 2 before winning 21-16, 21-13, while at No. 5, Bradbury and Ireland were 21-11, 21-17 winners. Perillo and Bollinger forced a third set at No. 3 before falling 21-11, 11-21, 15-12.
Stevenson is now idle until the weekend of April 1-2 when it competes in a tournament hosted by UNC-Wilmington. The Mustangs will face Division I foes College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and Mercer in addition to the host Seahawks.
