Mustangs And Knights To Battle For Title On Saturday In Pennsylvania

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second straight season, the Stevenson University men's volleyball team will meet the Knights of Arcadia University for the Middle Atlantic Conference championship.  This time there will be a change of venue as the battle will take place on Saturday night at Alumni Gymnasium in Glenside, Pennsylvania with the first serve set for 7pm.  The winner of the match will earn an automatic birth to the NCAA Tournament as the MAC champion, with the loser waiting until Monday afternoon to see if an at-large birth is in their future.

Tickets will be on sale at the door $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students with I.D. Tickets for children six and under are free.

Championship shirts will be available for $18.

  • The second-seeded Stevenson will enter the match at 30-3 overall and 13-1 in MAC play.
  • The Mustangs are ranked third nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll and are winners of 18 consecutive matches.
  • Stevenson reached their second straight final by downing Messiah College on Wednesday night 3-0 by scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-21.
  • Away from Owings Mills Gymnasium, the team is 12-1, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Division I University of Charleston (W.V.) in five sets.  The Mustangs are 10-1 in neutral site games.
  • Senior Landon Shorts leads the side in kills with 339, with sophomore Logan Smiley behind him at 249 and followed by fellow senior Jason Gardner who has totaled 180.
  • Shorts who was named MAC Player of the Year this week also has a conference-high 78 service aces on the season.
  • He also paces the team in digs with 219.  Junior libero Derek Tangorra has 201.
  • Sophomore Nate Reynolds has been holding a block party at the net totaling 133 which is tops in the MAC.  His 1.330 blocks per set is good for second in the country.
  • Graduate student Christian Taylor and sophomore Aleks Melbardis have been the primary setting combo used by the Mustangs this season.  Taylor leads the way with 896, with Melbardis chipping in 218.
  • Earlier this season Taylor eclipsed 4,000 assists for his Division III career.
  • Stevenson led the MAC in hitting percentage (.279), opponent hitting percentage (.112), and blocks (289.5).
  • Shorts, Reynolds, and Taylor earned First Team All-Conference honors, with Gardner and Tangorra being placed on the Second Team. 

  • The top-seeded Arcadia will come into the contest with a record of 25-10 overall and 13-1 in the MAC.
  • The Knights have been scuffling as of late dropping five of their last seven but got to the final by disposing of fourth-seeded Misericordia University on Wednesday 3-0.
  • Set scores were 25-18, 25-18, and 25-22.
  • Arcadia is 10-3 at home and 11-4 on the road while being 4-3 in neutral site games.
  • Jason Manley leads the team in kills 271, followed closely by Austin Braas 264 and Quinn Baily 208.
  • Baily has 191 digs to pace Arcadia with Manley adding 135 and Zayne George right on his heels with 134.
  • Braas with his 112 blocks ranks first on the team.
  • Anthony Devantier and Alvyn Abraham have been the setting duo for the Knights.  Devantier leads the way with 870 to Abraham 260.
  • Braas .472 hitting percentage is tops in the conference.

  • Stevenson leads the overall series 5-1.
  • The two sides met in the MAC final last season with the Mustangs taking the inaugural title 3-0.  
  • The 2019 season series is knotted at 1-1 with each team winning on their opponents home floor by a 3-1 score.

  • The Mustangs took down the Knights on March 16 in Glenside by a final of 3-1.
  • Set scores were 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, and 26-24.
  • Shorts led Stevenson with 14 kills, while Gardner added 11.
  • Taylor dished out 42 assists, with Reynolds chipping in five blocks.
  • Manley and Baily had 14 kills apiece.  Braas also was in double-figures with 11.
  • Devantier matched Taylor with 42 helpers as well.
