LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Stevenson men's volleyball team closed out their 32-game regular season ranked as the number three team in the country for the second straight week according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 15 poll as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mustangs who are also ranked No. 2 in the NCAA West Regional rankings, sit at 29-3 overall and 13-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference play, will be the number two seed in the upcoming MAC tournament which will begin on Wednesday night. The team is currently riding the nation's longest winning streak at 17 consecutive games and have appeared in the AVCA Top 15 for the thirteenth straight week.
Stevenson went 2-0 last week with a pair of 3-0 home conference victories bringing down Alvernia University and first-year program Eastern University. On Wednesday, the Mustangs dispatched of the Golden Wolves by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-13. Senior Landon Shorts led the team with 11 kills to go along with four aces, three digs, and a pair of blocks. Junior Kyle Bosko and sophomores Logan Smiley and Nate Reynolds each posted eight kills combining for nine blocks and five digs, while graduate student Christian Taylor gave out 36-assists. Then Saturday, the Mustangs honored their seniors Jason Gardner, Billy Russo, Shorts and Taylor prior to beating the Eagles in straight sets 25-9, 25-15, and 25-13. The four seniors all appeared in the starting lineup and joined together to post 30 kills, 20 digs, and five aces. Junior Nathan Bosse and Reynolds recorded five kills apiece, while Bosko added one. Between the two matches on the week junior libero, Derek Tangorra racked up 24 digs.
The Mustangs begin MAC tournament play tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10 when they host the third-seeded Falcons of Messiah College in a semi-final starting at 7pm inside Owings Mills Gymnasium. The other semi-final will be between top seed Arcadia hosting fourth seed Misericordia also at 7pm.
