No. 6 Mustangs Sweep Trine For Fifth Straight Win

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - No. 6 Stevenson made quick work of Trine in a 3-0 non-conference men's volleyball victory Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium for its fifth straight win.  Set scores were 25-12, 25-21, and 25-10.

  • The two sides started the match tight as they shared the opening ten points to be deadlocked at 5-5.
  • Trine (6-16) took a brief one-point edge 6-5 on a kill from Kyle Dixon.
  • Stevenson (17-3) seized control of the set from there using a 16-1 run with kills from sophomores Logan Smiley and Nate Reynolds along with three aces in a row by Smiley and one off the hand of senior Jason Gardner to take a 21-7 lead.
  • The Thunder picked up three of the next four thanks to a kill for Jackson Condrey and two home miscues to pull within 22-10.
  • A pair of kills from senior Landon Shorts and a combination block between junior Nathan Bosse and Gardner closed the first 25-12.
  • The Mustangs hit .321 as a team to the guests .069.

  • With the score 3-3, Trine used kills for Dixon and Condrey to nudge in front 7-5.
  • A kill put down by Smiley sparked a 6-2 Mustangs push aided with a Reynolds kill and another Bosse and Taylor block to take an 11-9 edge.
  • The guests fought back thanks to two side outs by the hosts and a Dan Boren score to knot the score 12-12.
  • Stevenson continued the set of runs with an 11-2 sprint which began with four consecutive service aces by Shorts coupled with two Smiley kills to recapture the lead 23-14.
  • Trine battled back scoring six straight on three kills for Eric Santiago-Garcia and two blocks from Dixon to close the gap to 23-20.
  • Another kill set down by Smiley and a service error for Eric Reuther capped the set 25-21.

  • Kills for Shorts, Gardner, Reynolds, Smiley and an assisted block between Gardner and Reynolds opened a sizeable 11-3 margin to start the third.
  • Condrey stalled the Mustangs onslaught for a moment with a kill to make it 11-4.
  • However, the hosts stormed back with five straight including a three-man block from Shorts, Taylor and Bosse as well as an ace off the hand of senior Billy Russo to go ahead by double-digits 16-4.
  • The Thunder got the deficit under ten at 16-7 on a side out caused by a Bosse attack error.
  • Stevenson got scores from Gardner, sophomore Aleks MelbardisShorts, and freshman Tanner Stauffer to outscore Trine 9-3 down the stretch to take the set and match 25-10.
  • The Mustangs posted a .562 attack percentage in the set while holding the visitors to a -.053.

  • For the match, Stevenson hit .324 to the guests .043.
  • The Mustangs shared the ball more holding a 27-19 edge in assists.
  • Stevenson dominated on the service line with a 16-4 advantage in aces.
  • Shorts paced the home team with 11 kills, eight digs, and seven aces.
  • Smiley added eight kills, five aces, and three digs.
  • Taylor dished out a match-high 21 assists, with Melbardis chipping in five.
  • Dixon led Trine with a team-high eight kills.
  • Santiago-Garcia and Condrey combined for ten kills, seven digs, and a pair of aces.
  • Hunter Monday gave out 15 helpers.
