Men's Tennis Sponsors Third Annual Mustang Open

STEVENSON, Md. - For the third-straight year, the Stevenson men's tennis team and head coach Jason Cohen '07 sponsored the Mustang Open on June 12-13 at the Greenspring Tennis Courts where Middlebury junior Andrew Peters won the championship with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over H'cone Thompson.

and for the second consecutive year, a Division I player from Maryland took home the championship.

"This year's tournament went pretty well," said Cohen. "There was some great tennis. I would like to thank all of the participants and people who came out to watch."

Sophomore Ted Cooke (Snow Hill/Snow Hill), an All-CAC Second Team selection this season and junior Ben Petasky (Baltimore/Pikesville) represented Stevenson with Cooke advancing to the quarterfinals where he was beaten by eventual champion Peters, 6-1, 6-1.

Cohen and assistant coach Jason Goldman-Petri also participated.

A native of Baltimore and graduate of McDonogh High School, Peters just completed his junior season at Division III Middlebury where he played at No. 1 singles for the No. 1-ranked Panthers who went 23-2 and won their second-straight NCAA and NESCAC championship.

Peters, who did not lose a set in four matches in the tournament defeated current Washington & Lee assistant coach and former Kentucky Wildcat Elliot Datlow in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Thompson, who totaled a 63-26-1 record at Division I Lafayette from 1999-2003 and won two ECAC singles titles in 2001 and 2002, advanced to the championship match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Delaware freshman and Glenelg Country Day graduate Ryan Kent.

Thompson has also played in the Davis Cup for the Bahamas.

Former Maryland Terrapin Michael Coleman won in 2009 while former UMBC Retriever David Jackson captured the inaugural Mustang Open championship in 2008.
