Lee Nets Two in Mustangs 3-0 Win in ECAC First Round

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer sophomore Tariq Lee netted a pair of goals while junior James Vess scored his first goal of the season as the Mustangs cruised to a 3-0 victory over Franciscan in the ECAC Division III Men's Soccer First Round Friday evening at Mustang Stadium.

  • The Mustangs (12-8-1) had the first opportunity as junior DR Medtart sent a shot towards the near post from the top of the box but his shot hit off the post and out. On the ensuing corner kick, Medtart sent a cross to the head of sophomore Jay Smith but he sailed it high.
  • Franciscan (12-8) did not record its first shot on net until the 19th minute that was easily saved by freshman Matt Stellitano, who came up with another easy save a minute later.
  • In the 28th minute, Medtart sent another corner kick into the box but the header by sophomore Tariq Lee went wide.
  • Medtart sent a free kick into the box that goalkeeper Brian Gaughan came out to play but the ball landed at the feet of Lee but his shot was stopped by a Baron defender.

  • Just over a minute into the second half, the Mustangs had a corner kick that Medtart sent into the box. After the ball bounced around, Smith had his header blocked before the ball bounced to Lee who buried it in the back of the net.
  • Lee netted his second goal of the game just 5:01 later after Gaughan punched away a cross from freshman James Rosa. The ball bounced to the top of the 18-yard box to a wide-open Lee.
  • In the 65th minute, sophomore Pete Wickiser took a shot that was blocked out wide to junior James Vess, who tucked in a goal on the near post.

  • Stevenson outshot Franciscan, 17-10 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Mustangs improve to 4-1-1 in the ECAC Tournament and have won four consecutive. The team won the 2010 ECAC South Championship.
  • Stevenson's 12 wins are the most since 2010 when the team won 14 games. The school record is 15 set in 2005. 

  • Stevenson will face the winner of Penn State Harrisburg and Wesley in the ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Second Round on Saturday, November 10 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
