Men's Soccer Blanks Wesley, Advances to CAC Semifinals
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer junior Tyler King (Parkville/Calvert Hall) scored twice and sophomore Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) made five saves as the Mustangs posted their sixth consecutive win with a 3-0 victory in the first round of the 2009 CAC Men's Soccer Championship Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The win sends fourth-seeded Stevenson (11-8) to the CAC semifinals for the second time in the last three years where it will face top-seed and defending champion Salisbury.
In Saturday's other first round contest, Duke Mensah-Abrampah scored both goals, including the second in the second overtime as sixth-seeded Mary Washington held off third-seeded Marymount (Va.), 2-1.
King's two goals and career-high four points extended his scoring streak to four-straight games where he has totaled four goals and 12 points.
Both of King's goals were unassisted as a result on one-on-one moves in which he dribbled in and beat the Wolverine defense. His first came in the 22nd minute and proved to be the game-winner, giving Stevenson a 1-0 lead it would take into halftime.
The Mustangs' 1-0 lead could have been larger as they held a 10-1 advantage in shots, but Wesley keeper Nick Talarico made three saves and six shots were wide of the net despite quality scoring chances.
Neither team could find the back of the net for most of the second half until King scored his second in the 79th minute to put Stevenson in front 2-0.
Sophomore Kyle Baker (Mitchellville/Bowie) added his sixth of the year and his second in an as many penalty kick attempts to add a second insurance goal and cap the scoring at 3-0.
The Mustangs finished with a 19-6 margin in shots in a physical contest that saw 22 total fouls, four yellow cards and one red card.
Talarico finished with six saves for the Wolverines (10-9) while Flannelly earned his fourth shutout.
