LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Stevenson University men's lacrosse team saw its four-game win streak snapped with a 13-6 setback at Lynchburg College Friday evening at Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg (5-6) scored the game's first goal 1:52 into the contest, but the Mustangs (4-6) tied the game 1-1 at the 8:37 mark on a goal by junior JT Thelen. Trailing 3-1, Stevenson scored three straight goals in a span of 2:15, and a man-up goal by freshman Jacob Tatum put the Mustangs up 4-3 at the 2:54 mark. Evan Lombardo tied things 4-4 with 14 seconds left in the first, but a goal by junior Gray McKee as time expired put the Mustangs on top 5-4 after one.
Both teams scored one goal in the second quarter. Lombardo scored with 7:17 left before halftime, but Stevenson reclaimed the lead 34 seconds later on Thelen's second goal of the game as the guests took a 6-5 lead into intermission.
Lynchburg scored all four goals in the third quarter to take a 9-6 lead into the final frame, then tacked on four more goals in the fourth as it outshot Stevenson 19-7 in the second half and 36-26 for the game.
Hornet goalie CJ Santora turned aside 13 shots while Stevenson goalie Sam Ross had 12. Thelen led the Mustangs with two goals and an assist for his third straight multi-goal game and seventh of the season. Tatum contributed a goal and an assist with McKee, Harrison Faecher and Collin Tucker each adding single tallies. Sophomore Justin Burnette was 12-22 on faceoffs. Junior Jimmie Walsh had two of Stevenson's eight caused turnovers.
Lombardo finished with five goals for Lynchburg, which won for the third time in four outings.
Stevenson returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Lycoming for a 3:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
