Mustangs Fall to Utica in Regular Season Home Finale

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team rallied to tie the game at 2-2 at the first intermission but Utica scored three unanswered as the Pioneers posted a 5-2 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over the Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • The Pioneers (15-6-2, 12-3-1 UCHC) scored on their third shot of the game as Jarrod Fitzpatrick scored on a redirect off a shot from the point by Daniel Fritz.
  • Just 36 seconds after the goal, the Mustangs (10-13-0, 7-9-0 UCHC) were whistled for the first penalty of the game. Gregg Burmaster found the back of the net 29 seconds later, sending a wrister over the glove of freshman Riley McVeigh.
  • Midway through the period, Utica was called for a penalty to give the hosts its first power play opportunity. Burmaster recorded a shorthanded shot before back-to-back shots by freshman Jarrod Vroman and junior Austin Swingle.
  • Seven seconds after the penalty expired, freshman Ryan Patrick got the hosts on the board after a low angle shot hit off players and into the back of the net. Sophomore Aaron Murray and Swingle picked up the assists.
  • Just 21 seconds after Stevenson killed off a penalty, Murray tied the game at 2-2 on a wrister from the point. After a shot by junior Jake McNamara, sophomore Houston Wilson played the puck to Murray at the blue line.

  • The Pioneers reclaimed the lead just 4:23 into the frame as Burmaster netted his second of the game. Shawn Lynch played the puck back to Justin Allen who send the puck towards the net before Burmaster took the puck on a bounce off the back boards and wrapped it around on the right post.
  • Stevenson killed off back-to-back penalties behind three saves by McVeigh and a pair of blocked shots by junior Bruce Stachitas.
  • Utica to a two-goal lead with 5:04 remaining as Burmaster recorded a hat trick after Lynch played the puck ahead to Burmaster at the blue line before a shot to the far left post.
  • The Mustangs went on the power play with 3:46 remaining but it was the Pioneers who recorded two shots.
  • With 17 seconds remaining in the period, Stevenson went on a five-on-three power play after a pair of Utica penalties. The hosts managed just one shot before intermission.

  • The Mustangs recorded just one shot on the two-man advantage to start the period before the Pioneers sent a third player to the box.
  • After killing off the penalties, Utica recorded the next three shots before Stevenson had eight of the next nine.
  • The hosts went back to the power play at the 13:07 mark but did not record a shot.
  • With 42.9 seconds remaining in regulation, Lynch netted a shorthanded, empty net goal.

  • Utica outshot Stevenson, 37-33, with the Mustangs holding a 14-7 edge in the third period.
  • Junior Dominic Brenza won a game-high 15 face-offs as the Pioneers held a slight 38-33 edge.
  • Murray, who has a point in three straight, posted his sixth multi-point game this season.
  • Patrick netted his second goal of the season while McNamara recorded a point for the second consecutive game.
  • The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 6-0-0.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 15 when the Mustangs travel to Elmira for a UCHC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
