Gray Nets a Hat Trick, Mustangs Fall to Manhattanville in Overtime

RYE, N.Y. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Nick Gray netted a hat trick but Manhattanville tied the game with 16 seconds remaining before scoring in overtime for a 4-3 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory Saturday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino.

  • The Valiants () created the early offense, recording the first seven shots on net, all saved by freshman Riley McVeigh.
  • Stevenson did not record its first shot on goal until 13:24 remaining as freshman Jarrod Vroman fired a shot from the point before Gray had a rebound shot on the back door.
  • Just past the midway point, Manhattanville took a 1-0 lead as Marco Ferraro scored on a rebound after a shot from Bryan Platt stopped in front of the net.
  • The Mustangs were whistled for a penalty after the goal, giving the hosts the first power play opportunity of the game.
  • Manhattanville built a 2-0 lead just 51 seconds later as Matt Lippa scored on a slap shot from the top of the left face-off circle.
  • Stevenson went on its first power play at the 11:48 mark and had a two-man advantage for 1:43.
  • The visitors took advantage as sophomore Aaron Murray dished the puck down low to junior Dominic Brenza who slid it across the front of the goal to to Gray for the shot.
  • With 2:50 remaining, the Mustangs went to the penalty kill with McVeigh making a pair of saves on the kill.

  • Early in the period, junior Christian Ripley fired a shot that dinged off the post.
  • The Mustangs went on their third power play attempt at the 8:24 mark but managed just one shot on net.
  • Just 2:08 after the penalty expired, the Valiants were whistled for another penalty but the visitors were once again held to one shot.
  • With 2:40 remaining, Gray found the back of the net for the second time on assists from freshman Ryan Patrick and Murray.

  • The Valiants fired the first four shots of the period on goal before Stevenson answered with four straight, including the third goal by Gray. Patrick picked up his second assist of the game.
  • At the 12:51 mark, the team's were whistled for matching minors to produce four-on-four play. Neither team recorded a shot during the two minutes.
  • With 1:40 remaining in regulation, Manhatanville pulled Tyler Feaver for a sixth skater and coverted on its third shot attempt to knot the game at 3-3.

  • Both teams recorded a shot in the overtime period while the Mustangs had three blocked shots.
  • Joel Knight scored 2:12 into the five-minute frame for the win.

  • Manhattanville outshot Stevenson, 46-23, including 19-4 in the third period.
  • The Mustangs won 53 of the 85 face-offs, with Brenza winning a game-high 18.
  • Stevenson was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Valiants were 1-for-2.
  • Gray's hat trick is the fourth hat trick in program history. His three points are tied for fourth in a single game.
