Power Play Leads Mustangs to 4-3 Win Over Neumann

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team scored three power play goals and four different goal scorers as the Mustangs posted a 4-3 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Neumann Saturday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Both teams had a shot in the opening 30 seconds of the game but each goalie came up with a save.
  • At 5:40, the Mustangs (4-2-0, 3-2-0 UCHC) went on the game-s first power play but Sammy Bernard came up with four saves.
  • Stevenson got on the board 1:45 after its power play expired as junior Christian Ripley tipped in a shot from the point from sophomore Aaron Murray. Freshman Ryan Patrick picked up the secondary assist.
  • Just 1:11 later, the Knights (0-5-2, 0-3-2 UCHC) responded with a power play goal as Zac Boyle scored 46 seconds into the player advantage.
  • Neumann took a 2-1 lead with 2:36 left in the period as Glenn Florczak scored a five-on-three.

  • The Mustangs started the period with 56 seconds remaining on the power play but a shot by freshman Jarrod Vroman was stopped by Bernard.
  • Stevenson had a power play for three minutes after Neumann was whistled for a major and game misconduct at the 3:47 mark. After the Mustangs served a two-minute minor, the hosts fired six shots on net before a second major penalty against the Knights.
  • The Mustangs had 29 seconds of a five-on-three before netting three goals on the major penalty.
  • Junior Austin Swingle scored on assists from classmate Dominic Brenza and Murray at 9:27 before freshman Luke Benitez scored from Patrick and junior Bruce Stachitas at 10:04.
  • At 12:57, sophomore Carl Lyden tipped in a goal to make it, 4-2, on assists from Murray and Brenza.
  • The hosts were called for a major penalty with 4:57 remaining in the period but freshman Riley McVeigh made a pair of saves before the Knights were whistled for a minor.

  • Both teams were whistled for penalties in the opening five minutes of the period, including four-on-four play for 26 seconds.
  • At 9:17, Neumann scored an even strength goal to get within, 4-3.
  • The Mustangs killed off a penalty late in regulation and battled through an empty net for 52 seconds.

  • Stevenson outshot Neumann, 50-26, including 28-7 in the second period.
  • The Mustangs finished 3-for-10 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill. The hosts won 43 of the 79 face-offs.
  • It is the second consecutive victory for Stevenson over the Knights, after dropping the first three in the series.
  • Stevenson improves to 14-7 all-time in one-goal games.
  • McVeigh finished with 23 saves.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, November 23 when the Mustangs travel to No. 4 and defending National Champion, St. Norbert, for a non-conference contest beginning at 8:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs return home on Friday, December 7 when the team hosts an UCHC and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest versus Lebanon Valley beginning at 7:00 p.m.
