Wright's Triple-Double Pushes Mustangs Past Messiah

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Montaque Wright registered a triple-double with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Stevenson University moved past Messiah College 80-66 in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Messiah (7-8, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) took an 18-14 lead with 12:06 to go as Will Young made two free throws.
  • Stevenson (11-4, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) scored nine straight points capped by back-to-back threes by Wright and Johnny Rhodes to take a 22-18 lead with 9:57 to go.
  • Rhodes had nine straight points for the Mustangs, with his layup with just under seven minutes left making it 28-25.
  • A three by Wright with 3:35 before intermission gave the hosts their largest lead of the first half, 37-31.
  • The Falcons scored eight straight points and took a 39-37 lead on a three by EJ Porter with 49 seconds to go.
  • A Rhodes basket with 21 seconds remaining tied the game, and the two teams went into the locker room deadlocked 39-39.

  • After four ties in the first four-plus minutes, Stevenson used a 10-0 run capped by a pair of free throws by Wright to take a 59-49 lead with 12:49 to play.
  • Five straight points by Messiah halved the lead to five with 12:08 to go, but nine straight points by the Mustangs gave them their largest lead, 68-54, on a free throw by Walt English with 7:15 remaining.
  • The Falcons whittled the lead down to eight, 70-62 with 3:52 left, and cut it to eight again at the 2:37 mark.
  • Stevenson closed the game on an 8-2 run, with Wright assisting on a Cam Harris Layup with 1:04 to play to complete the triple-double. 

  • Wright finished 8-16 from the floor, making all three of his three-point attempts and going 6-6 at the free throw line.  Five of his rebounds were on the offensive glass, and Wright also recorded four steals.
  • Wright's triple-double was just the second in program history.  Steve Segears totaled 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists against Keuka on February 23, 2007.
  • Wright's triple-double is just the fourth in Division III this season.
  • Rhodes finished with a career-high 21 points off the bench, going 10-17 from the floor, while notching five assists.
  • Junior Mark Terrell finished with 17 points on 6-7 shooting in just 19 minutes as he spent much of the night in foul trouble.
  • Harris tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Stevenson shot 50% for the game, including making six of its 12 three-point attempts, and also went 14-20 at the free throw line.
  • The Mustangs held Messiah to 36.7% shooting, including a 6-26 effort behind the arc.
  • The hosts held a 42-30 rebounding advantage and outscored the Falcons in the paint 48-28.

  • Stevenson wraps up its three-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts Widener in a 3 pm MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
