Hot Shooting Puts Mustangs Ahead of Presidents 80-65

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Senior Danzel Wright totaled 15 points and the Stevenson University men's basketball team shot 54.2% from the floor as it downed Washington & Jefferson 80-65 in the first round of the Greg Richards Tip-Off hosted by Allegheny College Friday afternoon.

Stevenson (2-0) also got 13 points on 6-9 shooting and five rebounds from junior Keith Moody.  Junior Jaylin Johnson added nine points and five rebounds, while junior Johnny Rhodes and freshman Kobe Colston each registered eight points.

Stevenson moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2014-15 and reached the 80-point mark for the second straight game after scoring 80 or more points just four times last season.

The Presidents (0-1) were led by Brian Lindquist's 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs never trailed and used a 13-3 run capped by a layup by Colston to build a 23-12 lead just over seven minutes into the game.  Another 6-0 spurt capped by a conventional three-point play by Johnson increased Stevenson's lead to 17, 35-18, at the 7:30 mark.  W&J chipped away over the rest of the half and a three-pointer by Amos Luptak as time expired cut Stevenson's lead to 10, 43-33, at the break.

Stevenson's lead never dipped into single digits over the final 20 minutes, as Wright and Johnson made layups in the opening minutes of the second half to up the Mustang lead to 47-33.  Stevenson took its largest lead, 61-41, at the 13-minute mark on a three-point play by Colston, and after the Presidents got the lead to 13, 67-54, with just under eight minutes left, six straight points capped by a Rhodes basket pushed the lead back to 19 with 5:31 to go.  The Mustangs never led the lead slip below 14 the rest of the way.

The Mustangs shot 55.6% in the second half and 54.2% for the game while limiting W&J to 39.1% from the floor.  Stevenson knocked down seven of its 17 three-point attempts, with the Presidents going 5-25 from long range.  Washington & Jefferson made 10 of its 11 free throws, while the Mustangs were 9-12.  Stevenson outrebounded W&J 40-28.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday in the second round of the Greg Richards Tip-Off when it faces Houghton in a 1:00 contest.
