Mustangs Shut Down FDU-Florham, Roll to 34-0 Senior Day Win

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University defense allowed a program record 45 yards and posted the fourth shutout in program history as the Mustangs blanked FDU-Florham 34-0 on Senior Day in Middle Atlantic Conference football Saturday afternoon.

  • Stevenson opened the game with an eight-game, 65-yard drive capped by a one-yard run by senior offensive lineman Brendan Flaherty to take a 7-0 lead 3:54 into the game.
  • After the two teams traded empty possessions, FDU-Florham's second drive ended on the first play as Jagger Green was picked off at midfield by Kobe Bolanos.
  • FDU-Florham got the ball back three plays later when a sack of Mustang quarterback Ty Crabb caused a fumble and the Devils recovered at the Mustang 44.

  • A 27-yard completion from Crabb to Sebastien Vainqueur capped a nine-play, 71-yard drive that took nearly five minutes to go up 14-0 4:37 before halftime.
  • FDU got the ball in Stevenson territory on an interception and 39-yard return put it at the Stevenson 34.
  • The Devils got down to the 24 before a fumble was recovered by Aqeel Mooring with 32 seconds to play in the half.

  • After FDU-Florham's opening drive of the second half stalled at midfield, a bad snap on the punt return and a tackle by Don Jones allowed Stevenson to take over at the Devil 30.
  • On 4th-and-9 from the 29, Crabb found Vincent Lee for a 29-yard completion and a 21-0 lead.
  • With 1:31 to go in the half and FDU on its own 32, Hanif Jones blocked a punt and Zach May scooped the ball up and ran 20 yards for the touchdown and a 28-0 lead.

  • Stevenson increased its lead to 34-0 with 10:15 left when an FDU lateral fell incomplete and was picked up by Mike Datu at the 25 and run in for the score.
  • Each of the final two FDU drives went three-and-out and the Mustangs ran out 6:45 on its final two drives, including a nine-play, 53-yard drive that ate 4:45 before stalling at the Devil 23.

  • Stevenson's previous low for yards allowed was 114 in a 19-0 win over Delaware Valley on October 22, 2016.  That was also the last time the Mustangs shut out an opponent.
  • Stevenson's other shutouts came in 2016 against Misericordia and 2014 against FDU-Florham.
  • The Devils entered the game averaging nearly 31 points per game, fourth in the MAC.
  • FDU-Florham finished with minus-19 yards rushing on 20 carries.
  • The Mustangs registered a takeaway for the 65th straight game and forced a total of three turnovers.
  • The win, coupled with Misericordia's 21-14 loss to Lycoming, moves the Mustangs into a tie for second place in the final Middle Atlantic Conference standings.
  • Stevenson has won five straight games.
  • The Mustangs racked up 336 yards of total offense, including 145 yards on the ground.
  • Crabb finished 16-29 passing for 188 yards and two scores.
  • Freshman Kevin Joppy carried 13 times for 72 yards.
  • Chaz Lyles had six receptions for 43 yards, while Vainqueur finished with three grabs.
  • Flaherty's touchdown was the first of his career, and also his first carry.
  • Hanif Jones led the Mustangs with six tackles, including 1.5 for a loss.  Izaiha Pitts had three tackles.
  • The Mustangs have won at least eight games for the fourth time in five seasons.

  • Stevenson has earned a spot into next week's Centennial-MAC Bowl Series, which pits the top three teams from the MAC and Centennial Conferences not qualifying for the NCAA tournament against each other.  As the top seed from the MAC, the Mustangs will be on the road next week.
  • Pairings for the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series will be announced Sunday evening following the announcement of the 32-team NCAA field.
