Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall Speaks at Football's Spring Clinic
Randy Edsall, the head football coach at the University of Maryland, was the keynote speaker at the first annual Stevenson football Spring Clinic earlier this month.
Edsall, the 2010 Big East Coach of the Year, came to the Caves Athletic Complex in Owings Mills on March 11 to headline a group of speakers that included the Mustang football coaches as well as Chuck Goldstein, the head coach at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., Eric Day, the head coach at Red Lion Christian Academy in Delaware, Kevin Burke, the offensive coordinator at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and Jared Ambrose, Towson University's quarterbacks coach.
Edsall, who guided the Connecticut Huskies to two Big East Conference titles and postseason appearances in each of his final four years there before being hired in January by the Terps, spoke on defensive strategies as well as what the Maryland coaching staff looks for in potential recruits.
"I thought it was great that he took the time to come speak at our clinic," said Ed Hottle, Stevenson's head football coach. "I thought that was fantastic.”
The clinic, which ran for nearly five hours, centered on a wide variety of football tactics, including the Triple Option, the Spread Offense and the 44 Defense. In attendance were over 60 area high school coaches and a handful of collegiate head coaches and coordinators.
The clinic was organized by the Stevenson football staff so they could connect with the region and introduce themselves to much of the high school coaching talent in the state. Hottle says that his coaches often attend spring practices and meetings with other coaches where they learn and get better, and wanted to give the same opportunity for his colleagues.
"With us doing that, it is our way of providing them an opportunity to get out and get better and learn," Hottle said. "A lot of times you learn as much from them as they do from you which is pretty neat.”
