Milliken Picks Up First Win, Baseball Shuts Out Penn State Berks, 5-0

READING, Pa. - Stevenson baseball junior D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern) picked up his first win of the season after allowing just two hits while striking out three and holding Penn State Berks scoreless over six innings as the Mustangs posted a 5-0 shutout over the Nittany Lions Thursday at Hintz Athletic Field.

The win was the fifth in the last seven games for Stevenson (12-22) and its second of the season by shutout.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the top of on a two-out, RBI-single by junior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) that scored sophomore Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive).

Anderson finished 2-for-5 with one RBI and was one of seven players who had at least one hit. Seniors Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster) and Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech) each went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Tarlow drove in Bihy with a single in the sixth to increase the Mustangs lead to 2-0 before Milliken gave way to junior Patrick Quinn (Mt. Airy/Linganore) who worked a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, allowing just two hits while striking out two.

Leading 3-0 headed into the top of the ninth, Stevenson added its final two runs on RBIs by sophomore Chris DeFeo (Columbia/Long Reach) and junior Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll).

After catching the first eight innings, junior Zac Stavish (Westminster/South Carroll) came on to pitch the ninth, retiring three of the four batters he faced. Sophomore Brad Blum (Olney/Magruder) was 1-for-2 with a double.

Stevenson returns to action a week from today when it hosts No. 1 Shenandoah at Yankee Stadium Field on April 21 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
