OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University men's and women's cross country teams will be in action this Saturday as they travel to Newville, Pennsylvania to compete in the 2017 NCAA Division III Cross Country Mideast Regional. The event is being hosted by Dickinson College at Big Spring High School.
The men's 8K championship event is slated for an 11:00 am start on Saturday, while the women's 6K race is set to begin at 12:15 pm. The Mustangs will travel to preview the course on Friday afternoon.
Stevenson enters the NCAA regional after a strong showing at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship on October 28. The men's team finished second overall and had two runners, sophomore Patrick Watson and junior Langston Gash, place in the top five overall, with Watson finishing second and Gash fifth. The Mustangs are currently ranked No. 7 in the USTFCCCA Mideast Region rankings.
On the women's side, Stevenson placed seventh at the MAC Championship. Junior Kelly Winkbauer finished fifth overall, the highest-ever finish for a Mustang women's runner, while sophomore Achol Odolla also earned All-Conference honors with a 17th-place finish.
The top two teams from each of eight regions will qualify to compete at the NCAA national championship, which will take place in Elsah, Illinois on November 18, hosted by Principia College. After that, 16 at-large teams from across the eight regions will be selected by the NCAA Division III Cross Country Committee. After that, the top seven individuals from each region who are not members of an advancing team will be eligible to compete as individuals.
The Mustang men finished 15th out of 52 teams at last season's regional meet, while the best finish for the women came in 2015 as they checked in 22nd overall.
